Meet the Women We Serve: Ashley Goldstein 'Looking Good Feeling Seen'

Ashley walked into Suited for Change simply looking for professional clothing but left with something far more valuable—a renewed sense of confidence and excitement for the next steps in her career.

“Coming from a scattered background in D.C., I’m transitioning from a shelter to a home, so my lifestyle is changing, my work lifestyle is even changing because now I can actually go to work more.” As she transitions from shelter housing into a home and continues building stability through work, her wardrobe has become another way to see herself reflected in the future she is actively creating.

Ashley’s story illustrates how life transitions involve more than finding a job—they also require rebuilding confidence and reclaiming a sense of self. Having the ability to choose how you present yourself is deeply personal and affirming. Although a new outfit won’t solve every challenge, it can restore a sense of agency during the most uncertain of times. Having clothing options is empowering because it grants people the ability to choose.  This kind of freedom fosters an environment where women can make choices that reflect who they are and who they aspire to become—offering a renewed sense of control and possibility as they move forward.

That sense of agency extended beyond the clothes themselves. What stood out the most to Ashley was the compassion and care that she experienced during her appointment. “I was floored by the professionalism and the patience,” she said in awe. “I was glad that my voice was respected. And…the patience was a pretty big deal because I [saw] how busy you all got…I saw at least two or three other women come in, and I saw the same level of respect.”

As a cocktail server with a part-time job in concierge services, Ashley has harnessed a repertoire of soft and technical skills. However, she didn’t always feel that her wardrobe reflected the capable professional she knew she was. Although Ashley enjoys her work, getting dressed in the morning has become monotonous. “I do feel like you all gave me fuel for my confidence that I needed. Instead of me wearing the same one or two pairs of pants that I have for work, I feel spruced up with the season: bright colors, you know? I actually feel like a lady.”

Ashley’s experience reflects a psychological concept referred to as “enclothed cognition.” This term describes the idea that clothing can influence an individual’s psyche. When we talk about clothing, it’s not just patterned materials covering your skin. Researchers found that clothing’s psychological effects stem from the piece’s symbolic meaning and the experience one has wearing it. And it’s true. As Ashley put simply, “If you look good, you do feel good.”

Confidence neither begins nor ends in the mirror. It starts within and is strengthened by the way we see ourselves. A sharp outfit can help reveal what was already there. That rediscovery was at the heart of Ashley’s visit. At Suited for Change, the styling appointments extend far beyond clothing. Every boutique visit aims to help women see their own potential, embrace change, and take the next step towards economic independence.

Every day, women like Ashley walk through our doors ready for a fresh start. When you support Suited for Change—through a financial gift, clothing donation, or volunteer service—you help women gain the confidence, dignity, and access to resources they need to pursue economic independence. We want every woman to leave Suited for Change feeling self-assured and ready for what’s next. Ashley said it best, “I’m glad I found out about you when I did. They say when th

e student is ready, the teacher will appear, so I guess that’s how Suited for Change came into my life.”
