An anonymous client shared how much they appreciated Patricia Blackshire, one of Suited for Change's volunteers who specializes in both career coaches and styling, emphasizing how seen and valued she made her feel:
‘When I first came to Suited for Change, I felt like a human ruin–professionally speaking. After years of struggling to get a job due to lack of experience and a phobia of, well, people, I was prepared to join a convent where I would spend the rest of my days in solitude writing daily devotionals for room, carrot, and board. Though that still doesn't sound like a bad idea, Patricia Blackshire, a job coach whose resume is too monumental to summarize, helped to convince me that I was capable of getting and keeping a job.
It started with one conversation and the cadence of her voice. It felt like a warm stream of pressure that lathered and washed off all the grotesque self-doubt that had corroded my thinking over the years. It felt like I had been living in a little sunless room for ages, and then suddenly someone ripped open the blinds, exorcising me with positive, passionate, and sane affirmations. "I'd hire you...You have a great voice...I'd hire you!"
She watered me and watered me with her words until little green plants began to grow such as optimism, ideas, and dreams of using my voice. The future became kinetic after such a grueling period of stagnation. Patricia reminded me that there was still much work to be done, and that I had all the tools necessary, for which I should be grateful. "Why should I hire you?" she often asked. I usually stumbled over my answer, but each time she taught me how to improve it: To always be confident, respectful, and to the point.
On that note, I will conclude my professional testimonial. Though I still have much to learn, God has blessed me with a job that has been a remarkable experience so far. I'm also browsing grant opportunities related to my field of study. I went from thinking that I couldn't get a job at a grocery store to wanting to apply for grants!
What has changed? Something I've learned that applies to anyone seeking to change their suit for the better. It does not matter how little or how much you know. What's more effective than being "brilliant" is believing in yourself brilliantly.’
